Amish Friendship Bread

Have you ever made Amish Friendship Bread? I recently finished my second go-round with it and am now out of starter bags and cannot continue. Boo hoo!! It is such fun and very tasty!!

I was given my first starter bag in early June and enjoyed the days of "mashing the bag". On day six you have to add a couple of ingredients, mash the bag for a few more days and then day ten is the best!!!

Additional ingredients get added to this thoroughly mashed bag, then divided up into bags to share with your friends (be sure to keep one for yourself so you can continue) and then you get to bake two loaves of this yummy bread.

I'm hoping that one of the recipients of my starter bags has one saved for me so I can continue this fun little ritual of mashing the bag, adding ingredients, mashing the bag, sharing the starters and enjoying this tasty cinnamony bread that disappears faster than time!! If anyone ever offers you a starter bag, grab it - you'll love it!!!

Hi, sugar!! I've had that but one friend brought me some once that had chocolate chips in it. It was horrible and I LOOOOVE chocolate chips. Not good for this bread however.

Hi Joyce!

My sister & I used to do the Amish Friendship Bread years ago. It was so much fun and we kept it going for a long time.

Hope your summer has been a great one! Hugs, Sherry

I have done this before, several times. Last year I did it and did it and did it and finally had to call it quits! The family had had their fill for sure and I had given the starters and freshly baked bread out to so many people....but I thoroughly enjoyed the daily mashing!

Hi Joyce,
I LOVE Amish Friendship bread , but I have not been fortunate to have been given any starter for years!!! I think I may have a recipe around here somewhere to make the starter! I must look that up. I have been craving some lately.
Blessings~

DIRECTIONS
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Let stand 10 minutes. In a 2 quart container glass, plastic or ceramic container, combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix thoroughly or flour will lump when milk is added. Slowly stir in 1 cup milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Cover loosely and let stand until bubbly. Consider this day 1 of the 10 day cycle. Leave loosely covered at room temperature.
On days 2 thru 4; stir starter with a spoon. Day 5; stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Days 6 thru 9; stir only.
Day 10; stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Remove 1 cup to make your first bread, give 2 cups to friends along with this recipe, and your favorite Amish Bread recipe. Store the remaining 1 cup starter in a container in the refrigerator, or begin the 10 day process over again (beginning with step 2).
FOOTNOTES
Editor's Note
Once you have made the starter, you will consider it Day One, and thus ignore step 1 in this recipe and proceed with step 2. You can also freeze this starter in 1 cup measures for later use. Frozen starter will take at least 3 hours at room temperature to thaw before using.

I remember, years ago, my wife and kids (now in the 50s) shared something like this bread. Not sure what they called it or what eventually happened but it was sure good and I still got one roll around my middle. A leftover.

Joyce, I used to make that alot in NJ when we had the farm. I justified eating all that bread and doing the farm work to get rid of the calories!

Joyce, I have never eaten Amish friendship bread. Sounds like the process is fun. Sounds a little like sourdough but not!
Hope you get your starter and I hope I find some myself!
Have a great weekend!

Hi there!

Isn't friendship bread DELICIOUS?! I made fun of my friend for doing it, then she brought in the results and I begged for a starter bag!

I followed the directions to a T.

Then, on the night that I made the loaves, placed them in the oven...they weren't even in there 15 minutes when the oven turned glowing orange and smoked poured forth out of the oven!

Later, I learned from the repairman that the thermistor in the oven broke so the oven heated up to it's hottest potential!

I was soooooooooo sad!

Hopefully I'll get another starter batch from someone else !

Smiles,
Bella
