Those Were The Days, My Friend

This is a picture of me (on the right) and my best friend from high school, Nancy. We met the first day of freshman year. Prior to high school, girls were not allowed to wear pants to school. In elementary school, on cold winter days, our mothers would often make us wear pants under our dresses - which we all despised doing, but we did it because our mothers told us to. The year we started high school, they lifted the ban on pants. We were all so excited to have the option of wearing them, though no one wore them the first day of school, well no one except Nancy. She wore blue jeans - low, low hip hugger blue jeans. Nancy had long blond hair and a gorgeous golden tan from spending the summer at her beach house in Surf City. She was the talk of the freshman class and we quickly became the very best of friends.

Nancy and I spent all of our time together throughout our four years of high school. We grew up together, shared our dreams and made memories to last a lifetime. Nancy came to visit me today at my sister's home in New Jersey. We have not seen each other in 18 years, though we have kept in touch with holiday cards and emails. I just cannot tell you what a pleasure it was to see my very best high school friend in person today. Sure we both look a little older, but she has the same fantastic sense of humor, the same wonderful laugh that makes you feel good all over and such a calming peacefulness about her that brought me back to days gone by that I will cherish forever.

I love this picture of us. I have a picture of us standing the same way when we were 17. When I get back home to Florida, I am going to scan that picture for posting. It's so nice to see an old friend. It reminds us of who we once were and how far we've come since then. Nancy helped me become the person I am today and that is a wonderful thing.

Those were the days my friend. We thought they'd never end . . .

How ‘kewl’ that you’re still in touch with friends from school. I’ve lost track of everyone.

A sweet story! I went to my 50th class reunion this year!! That tells you -- we couldn't wear pants in school either!! Wait, I think we did on a picnic day, or some field trip!

So nice to meet you! I live in FL too!

How fun for you! Wearing pants to school didn't happen until after I graduated and even then it didn't include jeans. I remember going to ball games on the bus and we could wear pants but were warned not to wear jeans--we wanted to give the right impression.

Your friend is very lucky, you had lovely things to say about her. She probably says much the same about you.

I loved hearing about your friend. My best friend, Nancy, was my best friend in high school. She lives in Hudson, FL and I live in PA. Isn't it great having a friend that knows the "real" you and loves you anyway? That's the way that I feel.

Cool, I have a friend Nancy as well that I met in High School and we are still friends. We don't live far away from each other, so we get together often. It not very often that you can say you've know each other for over 30 years.

Ciao

What a wonderful post. I can't wait to see the picture of you and Nancy when you were 17. I was in high school too when pants were a big issue. Unbelievable isn't it?

That must have been soooo special to be able to get together after all those years. I have never heard of not being able to wear pants to school..maybe they just don't do it around here.
I can't imagine you didn't get together for soooo long! Do you think you'll be able to keep more in touch now?
Hope you have a very lovely day.
